Native Plants

West Virginia Natives



          These are a few of the native plants in our area. All of these plants like shaded areas to one degree or another. As these plants become more and more scarce in the wild it's a good idea to plant a few in the shaded areas of your flower garden. 
          This will help you fill in those shady areas and give you some unusual plants to show to your friends.


Bloodroot



     One of the first flowers of spring. This one likes rich woods dirt but can grow in more marginal soils.  Bloodroot will tolerate early spring sun well. The plant grows from 8-12 inches tall and if the root is broken it will have a red center. Poppy family

Spiderwort



     This one is sometimes cultivated. It has a violet flower with golden stamens and almost round petals. Will grow along a woods edge or in not too dense a tree stand. Spiderwort family.

Wild Iris



     In our neck of the woods you can find these Iris growing in the woods or they will somtimes be clinging to a hillside and draped over the edge looking like they will fall at any moment. They can stand some morning sun but shade after that. Height is 4 to 8 inches.If you get a bed of these babies going they can realy make a show.

Blue Cohosh



     This plant has clusters of flowers that are yellow-green in color. It grows from 1-3 feet tall and after flowering deep blue berries will grow. It is probably best if used for it's folage because the flowers themselves are not super impressive. They will look very nice when you get a bunch growing together. Barberry Family

Black Cohosh



     Like Blue Cohosh this plant is best used for it's folage. Black Cohosh likes woods dirt and fairly shaded area. The plant itself grows from 1-2 feet tall with the stamen and pisil from 3-8 feet tall.It can tolerate less than perfect soil. Buttercup Family.

Ginseng



     Ginseng likes a good woods dirt and 70-80 % shade. A north or east facing area is best with a slope to it or a flatter area is drainage is good. This plant can be difficult to grow but can be quite valuable as a cash grop if grown in a wild simulted style. Ginseng likes the ground moist but not wet or soggy. It will grow on south or west facing areas but they have to have some moisture good shade. If you can get it to grow correctlyit can be quite a nice plant and conversation piece. Ginseng Family

Jack-In-The -Pulpit  (woodland)



     This plant is for looks all the way. The flowering part of the plant is very attractive. It has a flaplike spathe and is green or purplish brown and it often is striped and curves over the club shaped spadix. The plant grows from 1-3 feet tall with three leaf clusters on 1 or 2 stalks. The fruit is a bright shiny cluster of berries. Th jacks can stand some morning shade but for the most part prefer shade and good dirt.
Price: $1.50-$4.00 each depending on size.


Wild Geranium



     This plant grows from 1-2 feet tall and tolerates morning sun but will need shade the biggest part of the day. It has 5 parted leaves with a pretty pink flower. This is an attractive plant if planted in bunches. This plant would prefer good rich soil but can do well on less. Geranium Family

Columbine



     This plant has drooping red and yellow bells with spurs. It grows 1-2 feet tall and in the wild likes rocky slopes but you can grow it just fine around the home. Buttercup Family

Trillium (Red)




     This flower has 3 leaves and 3 petals on the flower. It grows 6-16 inches tall and likes good rich dirt. It will tolerate early morning sun but otherwise this one needs shade. Lily Family

Trillium (White)




     This trillium usually has white petals but will often turn pink as the flower ages. Large blossom 2-4 inches. The plant is 10-18 inches tall. It has 3 leaves and 3 petals as all trilliums do. It likes rich soil and shade. Lily Family

Trillium (Toadshade)




     This trillium has stalkless flowers with erect petals and erect and spreading sepals. The flowers are purple and somtimes yellow. They grow 3-12 inches tall and prefer good rich soil but will sometimes do well in somewhat lesser soils. Lily Family

Spring Larkspur



     This flower has leaves like a buttercup and the flowers are spurred. The upper sepal is extended to form an erect spur. The plant grows 1-2 feet tall and sometimes a little more. This one likes shade and slopes although it can stand morning sun. Buttercup Family

Goldenseal




     This plant plant likes shade but can stand a bit more sun than ginseng.It grows from 6-12 inches tall and can have 1 or 2 leaves. It has a small white blossom that gives way to bright red berries later on. This plant is a medicinal as well as one that can be grown and sold as a dried root.

Maidenhair Fern




     This fern likes rich soil and shade. It grows 12-18 inches tall. The leaf stalk is thin and either black or dark brown. The roots can be divided to increase numbers.
